Pacem in Terris Seeks to be a Channel of God's Peace

Our Mission

Believing that peace comes from God, and flows through the human heart, Pacem in Terris seeks to be a channel of God’s peace in the lives of His people and, therefore, the world.

Pacem in Terris, Peace on Earth, is a Franciscan center of spirituality called to serve God's people through prayer and by providing the opportunity to retreat into the silence and solitude of a simple hermitage environment. In the midst of the natural beauty of the forest and prairie, people of all faiths are invited to come and respond to God's call: "Be still and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:11)

Why Make a Hermitage Retreat?

To be alone with God is vital to spirituality. Nevertheless, most of us tend to neglect or push aside opportunities to move deeper into intimacy with Him.

With fast-paced, noisy, hectic and over-scheduled lives, we struggle daily to meet our personal needs and to balance relationships. Listening to others (truly listening) seems almost impossible - and it is even more difficult to hear one's inner voice or the voice of God.

Sometimes, we need to step away from the struggles and influences of a secular society into a simple "desert-like" environment of silence and solitude. The dedicated silence and simplicity of a hermitage makes it possible for each hermit guest to seek and enter into an intimate union with God. In that intimacy, God's love heals, nourishes, guides and transforms lives. He delights as we offer Him our praise and thanksgiving, and intercede for the needs of His people.

Pacem in Terris is a hermitage sanctuary, where guests can be free of daily distractions, pressures and obligations. Without schedules or expectations to meet, the hermit can more simply follow Christ's example of seeking a "lonely place to pray", allow God to become the sole retreat director, and find rest in body, mind and spirit.
